India Dominates Pakistan, Stays Alive in T20 World Cup

In a crucial encounter at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, India showcased an impressive all-round performance to secure a convincing victory over Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday.

After suffering a defeat against New Zealand in their opening match, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side needed this win to reignite their campaign, and they delivered against their arch-rivals, Pakistan, who struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first, but they quickly found themselves in trouble. India’s bowlers, led by Arundhati Reddy, who took 3 wickets for just 19 runs, and Shreyanka Patil, with 2 for 12, effectively restricted Pakistan to a modest total of 105 runs for 8 wickets. Nida Dar top-scored for Pakistan with a resilient 28 runs off 34 balls, but her efforts were not enough to propel her team to a competitive score.

In response, India approached their chase with caution, needing just 106 runs for victory. The Indian batting lineup took a steady approach, focusing on building partnerships rather than taking unnecessary risks. The only wicket to fall in the powerplay was that of Smriti Mandhana, who was dismissed for just 7 runs. Shafali Verma, who scored 32 runs off 35 balls, and Jemimah Rodrigues, promoted to number three, laid a solid foundation for the chase.

Verma’s innings included some aggressive strokes, but her quest to accelerate the innings led to her dismissal just after the drinks break. Harmanpreet Kaur joined Rodrigues at the crease, and the pair worked well together, guiding India towards the target. Despite a brief scare when Kaur was forced to retire hurt after scoring 29 runs due to an injury, India continued to push forward.

Fatima Sana, the Pakistan captain, attempted to shift the momentum with two wickets in quick succession, but India remained unfazed. The match concluded with seven balls to spare when new batter Sajeevan Sajana hit a boundary with her first ball, sealing a comfortable win for India.

This victory was particularly significant as it put India back in contention in Group A, where they will face tough opponents like Sri Lanka and Australia in their upcoming matches. With this win, India has improved their standing in the tournament and regained confidence after their earlier setback.

Historically, India holds a significant advantage over Pakistan in T20 matches, and this victory reaffirmed their dominance. India now looks forward to building on this momentum and aiming for a successful campaign in the T20 World Cup.
