Biggest victories in IPL history (By Runs)

The IPL is known for its close finishes and thrilling contests, but sometimes, a single team just goes berserk, leaving their opponents with no chance. These matches turn into one-sided displays of power-hitting and exceptional bowling, creating records that stand the test of time. Here’s a look at 5 such encounters where the winning team registered the biggest victories in terms of runs:

1. Mumbai Indians Crush Delhi Capitals (2017) – 146 Runs:

In 2017, Mumbai Indians batted first and put up a commanding total of 212/3 on the board, thanks to explosive knocks from Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard, both scoring over 60 runs. When Delhi Capitals came out to chase, their batting crumbled under pressure. Mumbai’s bowling attack, led by Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma with 3 wickets each, dismantled the Delhi lineup for a mere 66 runs, securing a massive 146-run victory.

2. RCB Against Gujarat Lions (2016) – 144 Runs:

This match was a treat for fans who witnessed batting brilliance from two legends – Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. RCB posted 248/3. Both batsmen scored centuries for Royal Challengers Bangalore, with Kohli reaching 109 runs in just 55 balls and de Villiers smashing an incredible 129 runs off a mere 52 balls, including 12 sixes! Chasing a mammoth target of 249, Gujarat Lions were completely outplayed, collapsing for just 104 runs and losing by a massive 144 runs.

3. KKR Lights Up with a Thumping Win vs RCB (2008) – 140 Runs:

The very first match of the IPL in 2008 set the tone for the high-energy-fueled entertainment the league promised. Brendon McCullum of KKR scored a blistering 158 runs off just 73 balls. With this, KKR posted an intimidating total of 222 runs. RCB in reply, had a forgettable outing with the bat, managing only 82 runs, handing KKR a massive 140-run victory, and writing their name in IPL history.

4. Chris Gayle’s Masterclass Powers RCB Past KXIP (2015) – 138 Runs:

Yet another entry for RCB on this list! In 2015, Chris Gayle, fondly nicknamed “Universe Boss,” lived up to his title with a brutal knock of 117 runs off just 31 balls, including 12 sixes and 7 fours. AB de Villiers chipped in with a quickfire 47 runs in just 24 balls, as RCB posted 226 runs at the loss of 3 wickets. Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) were left shell-shocked. Their batting line-up was dismantled for just 88 runs in 13.4 overs, resulting in a crushing 138-run defeat.

5. Gayle’s Record-Breaking Innings Crushes Pune Warriors India (2013) – 130 Runs:

This match witnessed one of the most incredible T20 innings ever played. Chris Gayle, once again, was at the forefront of the destruction. He smashed a record-breaking 175 runs off just 66 balls,  garnished by 17 sixes and 13 fours, helping RCB capitalize and reach a huge total of 263/5. Pune Warriors India, completely dumbfounded, could only manage 133 runs, succumbing to a massive 130-run defeat.
