Lowest Scores Ever Defended in IPL History

The high-scoring nature of T20 cricket often steals the show in the IPL. But there’s something equally exciting about a well-defended low score. This article explores the top 3 instances in IPL history where teams successfully defended incredibly low totals, showcasing the power of exceptional bowling.

Chennai Super Kings (116) vs Kings XI Punjab (2009)

Believe it or not, Chennai Super Kings hold the record for the lowest defended total! Back in 2009, the second edition of the prestigious tournament, CSK only scored 116 runs batting first, with Parthiv Patel scoring 32 runs off 23 deliveries. But thanks to some amazing bowling, they shut down Punjab for just 92 runs, winning by a surprising 24 runs!

Sunrisers Hyderabad (118) vs Mumbai Indians (2018)

Another close call! In 2018, Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma, restricted SRH to a low score of 118 in the 23rd Game of IPL. But during the second inning, Hyderabad’s bowlers stepped up, dismissing Mumbai for just 87 runs and winning a thrilling encounter, making it one of the most memorable matches in the league.

Kings XI Punjab (119) vs Mumbai Indians (2009)

Back in the 2009 season again, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) only managed to score 119 runs batting first against Mumbai Indians, thanks to the wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara’s 45 runs in 44 balls. It looked good enough…until Mumbai almost pulled off the chase! Counting the Proteas all-rounder Jean-Paul Duminy’s 59 runs in 63 balls, MI fell just 3 runs short, thanks to a brilliant bowling performance by Punjab.

These dramatic victories prove that in the IPL, no score is truly safe. With exceptional bowling and a bit of luck, even the smallest target can become undefeatable. These matches stand out as evidence of the unpredictable and thrilling nature of T20 cricket.
