Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got off to a dream start on Monday night in their IPL match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Thanks to a brilliant bowling performance by Tushar Deshpande, CSK managed to silence KKR’s dangerous opening batsmen early on.
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad made a crucial decision by electing to bowl first, aiming to restrict the high-scoring KKR batting line-up. This decision paid immediate bonuses, thanks to the heroics of Tushar Deshpande.
Deshpande, entrusted with the opening over, shouldered the responsibility with assurance. Facing the in-form Phil Salt, Deshpande delivered a testing back-of-length ball outside the off-stump. Tempted by the possibility of a big shot, Salt made an attempt. A sharp catch at backward point by Ravindra Jadeja sent Salt packing for a golden duck.
This dismissal wasn’t just about getting a crucial wicket early on. It also saw Tushar Deshpande etch his name in the CSK history books. He became only the fourth CSK bowler, and the first since 2018, to grab a wicket on the very first ball of the match.
The first bowler to achieve this feat for CSK was former Indian pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji, who dismissed a Delhi Capitals batsman in 2009. Nine years later, the big South African all-rounder Albie Morkel replicated the feat against the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. In 2018, Deepak Chahar became the third CSK bowler to achieve this distinction, dismissing a Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman on the first ball.
Tushar Deshpande’s impressive delivery and Jadeja’s sharp reflexes ensured a fantastic start for CSK. This early breakthrough not only put pressure on the KKR batsmen but also boosted CSK’s bowling morale.
Deshpande’s feat adds another chapter to the rich history of the Chennai Super Kings, showcasing their ability to produce game-changing moments. The rest of the match will reveal whether CSK can capitalize on this strong start and secure a crucial victory.
