New Zealand Cricket Bids Farewell to Colin Munro

New Zealand cricket fans farewell a legend! Hard-hitting batsman Colin Munro announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday, ending a remarkable career that saw him smash records and entertain crowds worldwide.

Munro, known for his aggressive batting style, particularly in T20 cricket, decided to step away despite expressing his desire to be part of the upcoming T20 World Cup squad. While he hadn’t played for New Zealand since 2020, he remained available for selection. Though considered by the team, there wasn’t space for the veteran batsman in the final squad.

This decision to retire marks the end of an era for the 37-year-old.  Munro leaves behind a legacy of over 3,000 international runs across all formats, including a solitary Test match, 57 ODIs, and a whopping 65 T20 Internationals.  He also chipped in with handy bowling, taking seven wickets throughout his career.

Munro’s dominance was most evident in the shortest format of the game.  He holds the record for the most T20 centuries by a New Zealand batsman, with three to his name. One of his most defining moments came in 2018 when he blasted a record-breaking 47-ball century against West Indies, the fastest for New Zealand at the time. This knock also cemented his place as the first Kiwi batsman to score three T20 tons.

Munro’s international journey began at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup, and his senior debut came in 2012 during a tour of South Africa.  He quickly established himself as a key player in white-ball cricket, featuring prominently for the Black Caps between 2016 and 2019.  He represented New Zealand in multiple T20 World Cups and even the 2019 ODI World Cup.

While his international career has come to an end, Munro will continue to entertain fans in franchise cricket around the world.  As he bids farewell to the international stage, New Zealand cricket salutes him for his power-hitting, record-breaking achievements, and the sheer entertainment he provided over the years.
