Why Is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Not Playing T20Is? Gautam Gambhir Explains

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has explained why teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been made to wait for regular opportunities in T20 internationals, despite his impressive performances and growing popularity among Indian cricket fans.

The 15-year-old has already made history in international cricket, but India’s team management has continued to back the experienced opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Gambhir has made it clear that Sooryavanshi’s wait is based on team combination and the performances of established players rather than a lack of confidence in the youngster.

Gambhir Has Spoken Directly to Vaibhav

Gambhir revealed that he has personally discussed the situation with Sooryavanshi and explained why the youngster may have to remain patient.

The India coach acknowledged that Vaibhav was in good form but told him that opportunities are not always immediately available when other players have consistently performed for the team.

Gambhir also stressed that selection decisions are not influenced by social-media discussions or outside pressure. Instead, the captain and coaching staff have to determine which combination gives India the best chance of winning a match.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma Remain India’s Preferred Openers

The biggest obstacle for Sooryavanshi is the form and consistency of India’s current opening pair.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have developed into a successful combination at the top of India’s T20I batting order. The team management therefore does not want to break up a partnership that has delivered consistently simply to accommodate a promising youngster.

Abhishek has been particularly impressive in recent matches. During India’s T20I series against Afghanistan, he produced a record-setting century as India completed a 3-0 series sweep. Samson also remained among the team’s leading contributors during the series.

For Gambhir, dropping either established opener solely because Sooryavanshi is performing well would create a difficult selection decision.

Vaibhav Has Already Made International History

Despite being only 15, Sooryavanshi has already achieved several milestones in his young career.

He became the youngest Indian to make his international debut, making his T20I debut against England at just 15 years and 99 days. He subsequently became the youngest player to score a half-century in men’s international cricket when he reached the milestone against Zimbabwe.

His rapid rise has generated enormous expectations, particularly after his impressive performances in domestic cricket and the IPL.

However, Gambhir’s message suggests India are determined not to rush the youngster into a permanent role before the right opportunity becomes available.

Strong Asian Games Performance Keeps Him in the Picture

Sooryavanshi returned to India’s playing XI during the Asian Games, where he made an important contribution in the semifinal against Sri Lanka.

The left-handed batter scored 38 runs from 21 balls, showing the attacking approach that has made him one of India’s most exciting young prospects.

His performance strengthened his case for more international opportunities, but it did not automatically change India’s established opening combination.

Gambhir: Outside Noise Won’t Decide India’s Playing XI

One of the clearest messages from Gambhir is that social-media pressure will not determine India’s team selection.

The coach believes players need to understand that selection is based on what the leadership group considers the strongest combination for a particular match.

That approach is especially relevant in Sooryavanshi’s case. With two experienced openers already performing well, India can afford to give the teenager time to develop without placing unnecessary pressure on him.

Vaibhav’s Role Could Still Increase During the Series

Although Sooryavanshi may not immediately become a regular starter, his presence in the squad remains significant.

India’s management can continue exposing him to the senior environment, allowing him to learn from experienced international players while waiting for the right opportunity.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel has also highlighted the value of Sooryavanshi spending time around the senior squad even when he is not selected in the playing XI. According to Morkel, being around experienced players, observing them and asking questions can contribute significantly to a young player’s development.

Why India Are Not Rushing the 15-Year-Old

There are several reasons behind India’s cautious approach:

  • Sanju Samson is an established international performer.
  • Abhishek Sharma has been in excellent T20I form.
  • The opening combination has produced consistent results.
  • India want to maintain stability within the playing XI.
  • Sooryavanshi is still only 15 and has plenty of time to establish himself.
  • The management does not want outside pressure to dictate selection decisions.

This does not mean India have lost faith in Sooryavanshi. Instead, it indicates that the team management believes his opportunity should come at the right time.

A Long-Term Star for Indian Cricket?

Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary start to his career means expectations around him are already enormous.

However, Gambhir’s approach could help protect the teenager from being overwhelmed by those expectations. Instead of immediately making him a permanent member of the XI, India can gradually increase his responsibilities as opportunities arise.

For Sooryavanshi, the current situation is therefore less about being dropped and more about waiting for the right opening in a highly competitive T20I batting lineup.

The youngster has already shown that he belongs at the highest level. The next challenge will be converting his limited opportunities into consistent performances when India eventually hand him a regular role.

Conclusion

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is not being kept out of India’s T20I plans because of poor form. Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that the teenager must wait because Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have established themselves as India’s preferred opening pair.

With Sooryavanshi still only 15, India have the luxury of developing him patiently. If his performances continue to match the enormous potential he has already displayed, his regular place in India’s T20I XI could be a matter of when rather than if.
