Yuzvendra Chahal has etched his name in the history books by becoming the first player to top the all-time wicket-taking charts for two different franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This historic achievement came during the IPL 2024 Eliminator match in Ahmedabad on May 22, where Chahal’s crucial wicket of Virat Kohli played a pivotal role in Rajasthan Royals‘ victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Chahal, already the leading wicket-taker in IPL history with over 200 wickets, claimed his 66th wicket for Rajasthan Royals by dismissing the in-form Virat Kohli. This milestone allowed him to surpass the previous record-holder, Siddharth Trivedi, who had 65 wickets for the Royals. Chahal’s dismissal of Kohli, one of the most prized wickets in the league, came early in his spell, ending with figures of 1-43 in his four overs.
Acquired by Rajasthan Royals at the IPL 2022 mega auction, Chahal has since become an integral part of their bowling attack. His journey to the top of the wicket-taking charts for the Royals has been swift, accumulating 66 wickets in just 45 innings. This is a stark contrast to Trivedi, who took 75 innings to achieve his 65 wickets. Chahal’s consistent performance has been instrumental in the Royals’ successes over the past two seasons.
Before joining Rajasthan Royals, Chahal was a mainstay for RCB from 2014 to 2021, where he topped their wicket-taking charts with 139 wickets from 113 matches. His ability to adapt and deliver match-winning performances for different teams highlights his exceptional skill as a leg-spinner.
In the IPL 2024 season, Chahal has been in top form, claiming 18 wickets in 14 games. This performance places him sixth in the race for the Purple Cap, awarded to the tournament’s highest wicket-taker. Among spinners, Chahal is leading the pack, showcasing his continued dominance in the league.
The Eliminator match saw Rajasthan Royals restrict RCB to a modest total of 172, thanks in large part to Chahal’s crucial wicket and strong support from other bowlers like Avesh Khan, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Trent Boult. Chahal’s early dismissal of Kohli set the tone for the Royals’ bowling attack, which ultimately helped them secure a four-wicket victory and progress in the playoffs.
Chahal’s unique achievement of leading the wicket-taking charts for both RCB and Rajasthan Royals underscores his status as one of the IPL’s greatest bowlers. As the Royals prepare for their next match, Chahal’s form and experience will be key to their hopes of winning the title. His record-breaking performances continue to inspire fans and fellow cricketers, cementing his legacy in the IPL.
