Gaby Lewis Joins Elite Club with Stunning T20I Century vs Sri lanka

In a remarkable display of skill and composure, Gaby Lewis led Ireland to a thrilling victory over Sri Lanka at Sydney Parade, Dublin, with an unbeaten century that has secured her place in the annals of T20 International (T20I) cricket history.

Lewis, who is celebrated for her aggressive batting style, scored a superb 119 runs from just 75 balls, propelling Ireland to a formidable total of 173/3. Her innings included 17 boundaries and two towering sixes, showcasing her ability to dominate both spin and pace. This knock not only anchored Ireland’s innings but also set a challenging target for the Sri Lankan side.

The game was a nail-biter, with Ireland’s bowling attack needing to defend their high total against a determined Sri Lankan lineup. Despite a strong chase led by Harshitha Samarawickrama, who scored 65 runs, and Kavisha Dilhari, who remained unbeaten on 51, Sri Lanka fell short by seven runs. The final over of the match was a tense affair, but Arlene Kelly’s cool-headed performance ensured Ireland clinched the victory.

Lewis’ century was her second in T20Is, following her previous century against Germany in 2021. With this achievement, she joins an elite group of just 11 women cricketers who have scored multiple T20I centuries. This list includes notable players like Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews from the West Indies, England’s Danni Wyatt, and Australia’s Meg Lanning and Beth Mooney.

The match saw Lewis and her batting partner Orla Prendergast form a formidable partnership, combining for a 119-run stand that set the foundation for Ireland’s total. Prendergast contributed a solid 38 runs, providing crucial support to Lewis. Their collaboration not only broke the record for the highest second-wicket stand for Ireland but also gave their team a fighting chance against one of the strongest teams in the T20 format.

Lewis’ performance has been described as a batting masterclass. She utilized her power and placement to great effect, delivering a knock that was both technically sound and exhilarating to watch. Her efforts were crucial in giving Ireland their first-ever victory over Sri Lanka in women’s cricket, a historic win that levels the T20I series at 1-1.

This win comes after a heavy defeat just days earlier, highlighting the resilience and determination of the Irish team. The final over saw tense moments, with Sri Lanka’s hopes pinned on Dilhari, but Kelly’s disciplined bowling ensured that Ireland’s victory was secured.

Gaby Lewis’ century not only highlights her exceptional talent but also marks a significant moment in Irish cricket history. As the series moves forward, the anticipation builds for the upcoming ODIs, where Ireland will look to build on this momentum and continue their impressive performances.
