ICC Men’s Player of the Month Nominees
Keshav Maharaj (South Africa)
Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s experienced left-arm spinner, is in contention for his second ICC Men’s Player of the Month award, having previously won it in April 2022. Maharaj’s stellar performance in the two-Test series against the West Indies has earned him this nomination. As the Player of the Series, Maharaj played a crucial role in helping South Africa secure a 1-0 victory in the ICC World Test Championship.
Maharaj’s contributions were instrumental, taking 13 wickets across the two Tests at an impressive average of 16.07. In the first Test in Port of Spain, he claimed 8/164, a performance that included dismissing key West Indian batters in both innings. In the second Test in Guyana, Maharaj’s 5/45, including a pivotal three-wicket haul in the second innings, broke important partnerships and secured a 40-run victory for South Africa. This series also saw Maharaj surpass Hugh Tayfield to become South Africa’s most successful Test spinner in history.
Jayden Seales (West Indies)
West Indies’ fast bowler Jayden Seales is another strong contender for the award, thanks to his outstanding performance against South Africa. Seales was the leading wicket-taker for the West Indies in the series, claiming 12 wickets at an average of 18.08. His impressive bowling, particularly in the second Test in Guyana, where he took 6/61, showcased his ability to lead the West Indies’ attack in the absence of senior pacers Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach.
Seales’ career-best figures in the second innings of the second Test were crucial in restricting South Africa’s lead, keeping the West Indies in the game. His efforts helped him reach a career-high 13th position in the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings, making him the top-ranked West Indian bowler in the format. If Seales wins this award, he will join Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie as West Indian recipients of this honor in 2024.
Dunith Wellalage (Sri Lanka)
Dunith Wellalage, Sri Lanka’s promising all-rounder, has made the shortlist for his exceptional performance in the ODI series against India. Wellalage was named Player of the Series after scoring 108 runs and taking seven wickets, playing a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s 2-0 series victory. His match-winning contributions included a career-best 67* in the first ODI, followed by a five-wicket haul in the third ODI, where he dismantled India’s top order.
Wellalage’s all-round performance against a strong Indian side, which included crucial wickets of star players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill, highlighted his potential as a future star for Sri Lanka. His achievements in this series have cemented his place as one of the most promising young talents in international cricket.
