The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the much-awaited Indian Test squad for the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The five-match series, set to commence on November 22nd, promises to be a thrilling battle between two cricketing giants.
Mohammed Shami, still recovering from an injury, has been left out of the squad. Washington Sundar, who recently scored a century for Tamil Nadu in its Ranji Trophy match against Delhi, was added to India’s squad for the second and third Tests against New Zealand at home. Following his career-best figures of 7 for 59 in the ongoing second Test in Pune, Sundar has now earned a spot in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad as well.
Prior to the New Zealand series, Sundar last played a Test match in March 2021, marking his return to the longest format after a lengthy break.
India opted to exclude Axar Patel, their premier left-arm spinner, from the tour. Instead, they selected three spinners: R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Sundar, who made a strong comeback with a seven-wicket haul in the first Test against New Zealand, was preferred over Patel.
Kuldeep Yadav was also unavailable for selection due to a chronic left groin issue. Kuldeep’s absence is significant, especially considering his impressive performance in the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he played a crucial role in India’s historic series win in Australia. KL Rahul has been selected as part of the 18-member Indian squad for the highly-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
Rohit Sharma has been selected as the captain of the Indian team for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy while Jasprit Bumrah will be his deputy.
The first Test will be played in Perth before the caravan moves to Adelaide Oval, the Gabba, the MCG and the SCG, in the same order.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Friday, along with India’s 15-member squad for the four-match T20I series against South Africa, starting from November 8.
Unfortunately, our star pacer Mayank Yadav won’t be a part of the touring party due to an injury. Mayank, whose stock skyrocketed after a series of impressive performances for us in the IPL last season, made his international debut in the recently concluded T20I series against Bangladesh.
However, the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian touring side to South Africa will feature Ravi Bishnoi. The ace spinner was part of the Indian team for the T20I series vs Bangladesh as well. Though Bishnoi failed to make the team in the first two matches, he returned with impressive figures of 3/30 when he was handed the chance to play the final match in Hyderabad.
Full Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar.
