Pooran Breaks Chris Gayle’s Massive T20 Sixes World Record

In the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, where clearing the boundary is as crucial as anything else, few players have mastered the art of six-hitting like West Indies’ Chris Gayle. For years, Gayle was the undisputed king of sixes, but as of September 1, 2024, a new name has emerged at the top—Nicholas Pooran.

During a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 match between Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Pooran shattered Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a calendar year. Pooran’s blistering knock of 97 runs off just 43 balls saw him hit nine sixes, bringing his total for the year to a staggering 139 sixes in just 58 T20 matches. These feat eclipses Gayle’s 2015 record of 135 sixes in 36 matches.

Pooran’s achievement is not just a proof to his incredible skill and power but also highlights the relentless pace at which he has been scoring in 2024. Whether it’s in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Lucknow Super Giants, the SA20 league in South Africa with Durban Super Giants, or in the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA with MI New York, Pooran has been in sensational form. His ability to adapt to different leagues and conditions while maintaining such a high level of performance speaks volumes about his talent and dedication.

What makes Pooran’s record even more impressive is that there are still four months left in 2024. With his current form, he could very well push this record into uncharted territory, making it even harder for future players to surpass. Pooran’s 139 sixes have come alongside 120 boundaries, contributing to a mammoth 1,844 runs at an average of 43.90 and a strike rate of 161.04. His impact on the game this year has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Although, Chris Gayle has always been on top in T20s when it came to smashing sixes. He has the top smasher in the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and even 2017.

However, Pooran’s recent feat underscores a shift in power within West Indies cricket. While Gayle laid the foundation and set the benchmark for six-hitting, Pooran has now taken that mantle and is carving out his own legacy in the shortest format of the game.

As the CPL continues and other leagues come calling, all eyes will be on Nicholas Pooran to see just how far he can push this record. For now, though, he stands as the new king of sixes in T20 cricket, a title that seemed almost untouchable in the era of Chris Gayle.
