Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, also known as the “Hitman,” has cemented his place in T20 history by becoming the first Indian batsman to smash a staggering 500 sixes! This incredible feat took place during a recent IPL match between his team, Mumbai Indians (MI), and their rivals, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The powerful hitter was on fire throughout the match, scoring an unbeaten century (105 runs) in just 63 balls. His knock was a masterclass in clean hitting, including 11 boundaries and a crucial five sixes that helped him reach the historic 500-sixes milestone.
Even with wickets falling around him, Rohit remained calm and composed, anchoring the innings with an impressive strike rate of over 166. These additional sixes have pushed his career total to a remarkable 502 sixes in T20 cricket.
While Rohit is the first Indian to achieve this feat, there are a few other global T20 legends who have hit even more sixes. The current king of six-hitting is West Indies’ Chris Gayle, followed by his fellow countrymen Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, and Colin Munro.
Despite playing just six matches in the ongoing IPL season, Rohit has already amassed a total of 261 runs at an exceptional average of over 52 and a mind-boggling strike rate exceeding 167. This includes his record-breaking century against CSK.
The match itself was a thriller. Rohit started strong alongside his opening partner, Ishan Kishan. Together, they put on a quickfire 70 runs in just 43 balls, giving MI a fighting chance to chase down CSK’s high score of 207.
Rohit’s stability was crucial after MI lost a couple of quick wickets. He then stitched together a solid 60-run partnership with Tilak Varma, keeping MI’s hopes alive. However, some exceptional bowling from CSK forced Rohit to slow down his scoring pace in the later overs.
This historic achievement by Rohit Sharma is a testament to his immense talent and power-hitting ability. He has not only become the first Indian to reach the 500-sixes milestone but has also solidified his reputation as one of the most dangerous batsmen in T20 cricket.
