Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a memorable night in their final league stage match of IPL 2024 against Punjab Kings (PBKS). They not only secured a thrilling four-wicket victory but also achieved several remarkable feats in the process.
Firstly, SRH chased down a mammoth target of 215 set by PBKS, tying their record for the highest successful run chase in their IPL history. Last year, SRH had also chased down 215 against RR in Jaipur. This year’s chase was even more impressive considering they lost their opening batsman, Travis Head, on the very first ball.
Opener Abhishek Sharma emerged as the hero for SRH, smashing a blistering 66 runs off just 28 balls. His knock included five boundaries and a staggering six sixes, displaying his aggressive batting style. This performance not only earned him the Man of the Match title, but also helped SRH get off to a strong start in their chase.
The victory propelled SRH to the second position on the points table with 17 points. However, their final position depended on the outcome of the second match of the day between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). A win for KKR or a washout in the match would guarantee SRH the second spot and a place in Qualifier 1.
This match also saw several other interesting records being broken. It was the sixth time in IPL 2024 that a team had scored more than 200 runs, joining the likes of KKR, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Interestingly, 215 became the joint-highest target chased down not only by SRH but also in any IPL match played at Hyderabad.
The target was equally significant for PBKS. It was the joint-second-highest total ever chased down against them, with Mumbai Indians achieving the same feat in Mohali last year. Overall, it was a high-scoring match that kept the fans on the edge of their seats.
Apart from Sharma’s heroics, valuable contributions from other SRH batsmen like Rahul Tripathi (33 runs), Heinrich Klaasen (42 runs), and Nitish Reddy (37 runs) ensured a smooth chase. While PBKS bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel managed to take two wickets each, it wasn’t enough to stop the SRH batting onslaught.
The match also highlighted the contrast between the two teams. While SRH displayed exceptional batting prowess, PBKS, despite setting a high score, failed to defend it effectively. This win cemented SRH’s position as a strong contender in IPL 2024, and their fans will be eagerly waiting to see their performance in the upcoming playoffs.
