Rohit Sharma Completes 1000 Runs in T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma has cemented his place in cricketing history by becoming the third player to score over 1,000 runs in T20 World Cup history. This incredible milestone was achieved during India’s Group A match against Ireland at the Nassau International Stadium on June 5, 2024.

During the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Ireland, India’s captain Rohit Sharma scored 52 runs from 37 balls at a strike rate of 140.54. His impressive innings included four fours and three sixes. Unfortunately, his performance was cut short due to an injury, forcing him to retire hurt at the end of the 10th over.

India’s victory over Ireland by eight wickets was significantly influenced by Sharma’s contribution. His 52 runs set the foundation for a straightforward chase of Ireland’s total of 96 runs. This win not only showcased India’s dominance but also highlighted Sharma’s crucial role in the team.

With this innings, Rohit Sharma has now amassed 1,015 runs in T20 World Cups, averaging 36.25 with a strike rate of 128.48 in 40 matches and 37 innings. This achievement places him as the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament, just behind his teammate Virat Kohli and Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene.

Additionally, Rohit Sharma reached another significant milestone during the same match, surpassing 4,000 runs in T20 Internationals (T20Is). Currently, he has scored 4,026 runs in 144 T20I matches, averaging 32.20 with a strike rate of 139.98. His T20I career includes five centuries and 30 fifties, underscoring his consistency and excellence in the format.

Recapping the match, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field first. The Indian bowlers dominated from the start, putting immense pressure on the Irish batters. Ireland found themselves struggling at 50/8, but thanks to some resistance from Gerath Delany (26 off 14 balls) and Joshua Little (14 off 13 balls), they managed to post a total of 96 runs in 16 overs. Indian bowlers Hardik Pandya (3/27), Arshdeep Singh (2/35), Jasprit Bumrah (2/6), Mohammed Siraj (1/13), and Axar Patel (1/3) delivered fine performances.

In response, India’s chase was anchored by Rohit Sharma’s half-century (52 off 37 balls) and supported by Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 36 off 26 balls, leading to a comfortable victory by eight wickets.

Rohit Sharma’s entry into the 1,000-run club in T20 World Cups sees him surpassing T20 legend Chris Gayle and closing in on Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene. With 1,015 runs, he now stands just behind Jayawardene and his teammate Virat Kohli, who tops the list with 1,142 runs.

India’s top run-scorers in T20 World Cups are:

  1. Virat Kohli – 1,142 runs
  2. Rohit Sharma – 1,015 runs
  3. Yuvraj Singh – 593 runs
  4. MS Dhoni – 529 runs
  5. Gautam Gambhir – 524 runs

Rohit Sharma’s achievements continue to inspire cricket fans worldwide, reinforcing his status as one of the greatest T20 players of all time.
