Ashwin becomes oldest Indian to pick up a 5-wicket haul in Tests

In a match that will be etched into the annals of Indian cricket history, Ravichandran Ashwin has etched his name as the oldest Indian to claim a five-wicket haul in Test cricket. The 38-year-old spin wizard, playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, shattered a 69-year-old record previously held by the legendary Vinoo Mankad.

The feat came on the fourth day of India’s Test match against Bangladesh. Ashwin, who had already picked up three wickets on the previous day, dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz to complete his five-wicket haul. This was his 37th five-for in Test cricket, equaling the legendary Shane Warne.

Ashwin’s performance was instrumental in India’s comprehensive victory over Bangladesh. He not only claimed wickets but also contributed significantly with the bat, scoring a crucial century in the first innings. His all-round brilliance showcased his enduring skills and his ability to continue performing at the highest level, even as he approaches 40.

With this achievement, Ashwin has cemented his place among the greatest spinners in the history of the game. He has now surpassed the likes of Courtney Walsh in the list of highest wicket-takers in Test cricket and is only behind Anil Kumble among Indian bowlers.

Ashwin’s ability to adapt to changing conditions and evolve his game has been a key factor in his sustained success. He has shown a remarkable ability to read the pitch, bowl variations, and deceive batsmen. His intelligence and tactical acumen have made him a valuable asset to the Indian team.

In addition to his five-wicket haul, Ashwin also achieved another significant milestone during the match. He became the only cricketer in history to have scored 20 or more half-centuries and taken 30 or more five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. This unique feat highlights his exceptional all-round abilities.

As Ashwin continues to defy age and expectations, there is no doubt that he will continue to make a significant impact on the game. His contribution to Indian cricket has been immense, and his legacy will be remembered for years to come.
