BCCI Inaugurates World-Class ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Bengaluru

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a significant step forward in nurturing cricketing talent by inaugurating the state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. This modern facility, set on a sprawling 40-acre campus, marks a new era for Indian cricket, focusing on sports science, rehabilitation, and player development.

The BCCI Centre of Excellence will replace the existing National Cricket Academy (NCA) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and is expected to be fully functional by early 2025.

Key Features of the Centre of Excellence

Location and Size

Spread over 40 acres, the facility is designed to meet international standards with features that rival some of the best cricketing facilities in the world. It houses three cricket grounds and 86 practice pitches, offering both indoor and outdoor training options.

Main Cricket Ground (Ground A)

The main ground, Ground A, is equipped with an 85-yard boundary and 13 top-tier pitches made from Mumbai red soil. The ground is also set up with floodlights and broadcast capabilities, allowing for night matches and live streaming.

Practice Grounds (Grounds B and C)

Grounds B and C, with 75-yard boundaries, serve as dedicated practice grounds. They feature 11 pitches made from Mandya soil and nine pitches crafted from black cotton soil from Kalahandi, Odisha.

Advanced Drainage System

To minimize disruptions caused by rainfall, the centre has installed a cutting-edge subsurface drainage system, ensuring the grounds are playable soon after any downpour.

Beyond Cricket: Focus on Sports Science and Athlete Development

The BCCI Centre of Excellence goes beyond just cricket. It houses a Sports Science and Medicine Block, aimed at supporting athletes from various sports. This facility will be accessible to top Indian Olympians, providing cutting-edge resources for injury management, rehabilitation, and sports science research. The centre includes a physiotherapy rehab gym, advanced sports science labs, and recovery amenities such as saunas, jacuzzis, and underwater pools.

Enhanced Training Facilities

Indoor Practice and Net Pitches

The Centre boasts 45 outdoor net pitches made from different soil types—Mumbai red soil, Mandya soil, and Kalahandi black cotton soil—allowing players to practice in diverse conditions. A state-of-the-art indoor practice facility features eight pitches with top-quality turf from the UK and Australia, supported by video analysis systems for real-time feedback.

South Pavilion and Dressing Rooms

The South Pavilion includes one of the largest dressing rooms in the region, spanning nearly 3,000 square feet and equipped with luxury features such as jacuzzis, massage rooms, and lounges. This building also contains commentator and match referee rooms, a spacious press conference area, and a Hall of Fame celebrating India’s cricketing legacy.

Future Expansion and Benefits for Indian Cricket

The Centre is expected to be a key asset in training not only emerging talent but also seasoned cricketers. According to VVS Laxman, head of the NCA, the facility will play a crucial role in player development, offering the best training conditions and allowing athletes to sharpen their skills in a range of environments without having to travel to different cities.

Moreover, the facility can host India A tours and first-class matches, enhancing its role in competitive cricket. With the variety of pitches and playing conditions available, the Centre will help Indian cricketers become more adaptable to diverse situations, ultimately benefiting the national team across formats.
