Veteran fast bowler Tim Southee has stepped down as New Zealand’s Test captain, with wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham set to take over the role during their upcoming three-match Test series in India. This decision follows New Zealand’s 2-0 series defeat against Sri Lanka in Galle, marking a challenging period for the team. Southee, who had led the Blackcaps since 2022, decided to step aside, believing it was in the best interest of the team.
Southee took over the captaincy from Kane Williamson and guided the team in 14 Test matches, with a record of six wins, six losses, and two draws. Despite his efforts, New Zealand struggled in their most recent matches, including a heavy defeat by an innings and 154 runs in the second Test against Sri Lanka. The Blackcaps are now preparing for a tough series in India, and Southee believes it is time for a leadership change.
“Captaining the Blackcaps in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honor and privilege,” Southee said. “Throughout my career, I’ve always put the team first, and I believe this decision is what’s best for the team. I’ll focus on my performances on the field, getting back to my best, taking wickets, and helping New Zealand win Test matches.”
Southee emphasized that stepping down was his own decision, made after discussions with head coach Gary Stead. He expressed confidence in Tom Latham’s leadership abilities and pledged to continue supporting the team, particularly the young bowlers making their mark on the international stage. “I wish Tom all the best in his new role, and he knows I’ll be there to support him on his journey,” Southee added.
Tom Latham, who has captained the Test side on nine previous occasions between 2020 and 2022, now faces the challenge of leading the team in India, where conditions will be difficult for New Zealand’s pace bowlers. Latham’s leadership will be crucial as the team aims to bounce back from their recent defeats and make an impact in the highly competitive series.
Head coach Gary Stead praised Southee’s selflessness, calling him a fantastic player and leader. “Tim is a true team man. It’s not easy giving up something you love, but he’s made this decision with the team’s best interest at heart,” Stead said. He added that “Southee remains a key part of the Test side, with 18 wickets needed to reach 400 in his career, a milestone only one other New Zealander, Sir Richard Hadlee, has achieved”.
New Zealand’s 15-player squad for the three-Test series against India will be announced soon, with Latham at the helm as the team looks to regain momentum and return to winning ways.
